There are four main aspects of Hungary’s carefare regime which provide a basis for comparison with an ideal typical “neoliberal welfare state regime”: (1) changes in the basis of social citizenship claims, (2) the practice of politically rather than financially motivated disinvestment, (3) the insistence on native women’s reproductive work, and (4) the simultaneous rejection of gender-equality policies and measures. I argue that Hungary’s carefare regime is one of the pillars of its anti-liberal rule and is the source of some of the dire social consequences of this form of governance.
