The Popculture, Cultural Policies, and Illiberalism initiative looks at the impact culture has on social dynamics and vice versa. On the one hand, this series engages with the way in which film, books, television shows, and memes contribute to the production of ideas and the ways in which they often serve as an informative reflection of political realities. It seeks to explore the intersection between popular music, celebrity culture, fanfiction, fantasy and populism, authoritarianism, and the promotion of illiberal ideas. On the other hand, this series also explores the significance of cultural issues as focal points for ideological and political debates. More specifically, it seeks to illuminate the intersection of both of the aforementioned focal points with illiberal ideologies and the ways in which illiberal dynamics simultaneously impact and are themselves impacted by culture.
